Email at Bigpond

Mark Edwards

In the last couple of weeks I have been experiencing some problems sending email. I have a cable, broadband connection through Bigpond.

Like most Internet issues like this, they tend to be transient and often resolve themselves, so I didn't pay too much attention to it at first. When the problem persisted for a whole day I decided to search a little deeper for the cause of the problem.

I have been connected via cable to the Internet for well over 5 years now and during that time we always set our outgoing mail server to one called mail-hub. So I decided to do a search for "mail-hub bigpond". One of the search results was a link to a forum discussion where a user had been experiencing the same issue as me within the last 48 hours.

This user had called tech support and they had told him to change his mail server to mail.bigpond.com. According to the tech he spoke to Bigpond have changed mail servers from the mail-hub to these new ones. Apparently, this had happened quite some time ago.

This seems to be a fairly reasonable thing to communicate clearly to Bigpond customers otherwise their email will just stop working.

I receive a regular email newsletter from Bigpond which covers relevant, technical issues relating to their consumer service called Bigpond Ponderings. I certainly don't remember reading anything about this impending mail server change nor did the person who posted his results on the user forum I found.

If you are experiencing a similar problem, this may be the solution for you.
