Firefox 1.0

Mark Edwards

If you do not use Internet Explorer as your web browser, chances are that you use Firefox.

Firefox is the free web browser developed by the open source community. These people contribute their time at no cost to develop software which in many cases rivals the commercial software of major corporations.

With the release of Firefox 1.0, this software continues to make inroads, accounting for around 15% of the browser market.

So why use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer?

Here are some reasons:

o Popup Blocking is built in.

o You can view more than one web page in a single window.

o You can open links in the background so that they are ready for viewing when you are ready to read them.

o Privacy and Security is substantially better in Firefox than IE. Firefox keeps your computer safe from malicious spyware by not loading harmful ActiveX controls.

o Google Search is built into the toolbar.

o Firefox includes an integrated RSS reader to let you read the latest news headlines and updates to your favourite syndicated sites.

o Files you download are automatically saved to your Desktop so they are easy to find. Files download quicker.

o At only 4.7MB for the Windows version, Firefox takes just a few minutes to download over a slow connection and seconds over a fast connection. The installer gets you set up quickly, and the new Easy Transition system imports all of your settings - Favorites, passwords and other data from Internet Explorer and other browsers - so you can start surfing right away.

I use both Firefox and Internet Explorer. Whilst some sites (very few) warn that your viewing will not be as good as with Internet Explorer, I have not found one yet where that is the case.

Firefox is well worth the bandwidth to download. You can get a copy at: www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
